We are providing modular brick faced cladding units for the eight storey residential development, Excelsior Works in Manchester for the developer, Mulbury. This development will provide 108 high quality one, two and three-bedroom apartments on the former Excelsior book binding works. Selected apartments will include balconies and access to a communal roof garden, while a basement car park provides on-site parking.
The design, developed by Tim Groom Architects, brings back an active frontage to the Bridgewater Canal towpath and reinterprets the architectural history of the site and the old-fashioned printing trays in the fenestration to the new building.
The precast cladding panel being produced at our Reddish facility use an encast handmade brick supplied by specialist brick manufacturer Michelmersh from their Charnwood factory. Each brick slip has two dovetail keys in the back which tie the slip to the structural backing panel. The panels are post pointed with a lime based mortar to complete the authentic look of the finished façade.
The installation started in May 2019; and will take approximately 13 weeks. This is a tight programme of works. In addition the site presents a number of challenges: firstly the building backs onto the canal, making access and installation more difficult; and the site is constrained as it is surrounded by a number of occupied multi-storey residential developments.
